Safety & Crisis Support

Maru is an AI companion powered by a large language model. It is not a human, a therapist, or a crisis counselor, and it will say so if asked. SUMMARU is not a medical or mental health service.

Every message to Maru is checked for signs of suicidal thoughts or self-harm, in all six languages the app supports. The check is deliberately broad — we would rather show help to someone who did not need it than miss someone who did.

When a sign is found:

• The app shows crisis line numbers for the person's region, with a one-tap call button.
• Maru stays in the conversation and responds slowly and warmly. It does not change the subject, does not offer music or exercises in that moment, and does not lecture.
• Maru gently asks whether the person is safe right now and encourages them to reach a real person today — someone they trust, or a crisis line.
• Maru never provides methods, means, or details of self-harm, and never says that ending one's life is acceptable. This rule applies to every conversation, not only flagged ones.
• In voice conversations, Maru also says one crisis number aloud.

These conversations are not shared with anyone because of the check. Our privacy practices are described in the Privacy Policy.

SUMMARU is for people aged 14 and over. It is not designed for children.

The safety rules are part of Maru's instructions on our server, so they apply to every version of the app at once. People can report any reply from Maru with the flag button in the app; we review reports and turn real failures into test cases that every future version of Maru must pass.
