Strike Once, Then Wait — Riverside | 3 Hour Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Bath

This sound was not built. It was struck by hand. A bowl takes longer to fade than you expect, and if you follow that length, the breath quietly follows it. Three hours, recorded by the water.

Strike Once, Then Wait

This sound was not built. It was struck by hand.

Most Summaru pieces are made quietly. A waveform is chosen, overtones are aligned, and a floor is laid that does not move. Sound made that way is even, and there are nights when even is exactly right.

Riverside came from the other side of that. A bowl carried out to the water. Sitting down. One strike.

Nothing to Do After the Strike

A bowl struck once rings for a long time. During that stretch the player has nothing to do — no next note to prepare, no count to keep. Only waiting.

You can hear the waiting in the recording. The sound swells, thins out slowly, and before it disappears entirely, another strike arrives. The intervals are uneven. A hand decided each one in the moment.

Built sound does not carry that unevenness. Some pieces are better without it. But on certain nights, the thing that wavers a little is the thing that feels like company.

Follow the Long Sound and the Breath Follows

It takes longer than you expect for a struck bowl to fade completely. Follow that sound the way your eyes follow something moving away, and the breath quietly matches its length.

The out-breath lengthens first, not the in-breath. A long exhale tells the body there is nothing urgent right now. What was being held loosens a little then.

It does not work by effort. The sound is long first; the breath comes after. Reverse the order and it rarely happens.

What Came in With It

The surroundings were left in. Wind passing low, insects holding a high note that never quite stops. Removing them would have made the recording cleaner. They were not removed.

A perfectly clean sound is also a sound from nowhere. Leave only the bowl and there is no telling where the bowl was. A room behind the sound is what lets a person sit inside it.

How to Listen

Any comfortable position. Let the shoulders come down once.

Make the out-breath a little longer than the in-breath. No counting. Exhale while the bowl rings, inhale as it thins — that is enough.

You do not have to stay to the end. Falling asleep is fine. It will simply be there for three hours.

Nothing new goes into a bowl that is still full.

Sometimes what you actually want only becomes clear after the mind goes quiet. That quiet does not arrive by adding. It arrives after something is set down.
